Introduction
"How should I enclose my timberframe?"
is a question we sometimes hear. You do have several options. A
few people build a second 2" x 6" stick frame outside
their timberframe and fill it with fiberglass insulation. Others
build a second stick frame between their timbers and fill this with
fiberglass insulation. Some people wrap & strap
- they build up multiple layers of drywall, plywood, insulation,
and more plywood over the frame.
None of these old-fashioned ways make any sense
for your timberframe today! Building a second frame costs you
more for materials and labor and you end up using less efficient
fiberglass insulation. Wrap & strap with sheet foam
insulation might get you close to the energy efficiency of stress-skin
panels, but its very expensive in labor and materials.
Important: R-Tight stress-skin
panels are ideal for enclosing your timberframe. They offer great
insulation, fast installation, and reasonable cost. Plus, theyre
custom-designed especially for your timberframe!
We make several kinds of R-Tight stress-skin panels
for you. We supply curtainwall panels with drywall inside and
oriented strand board (OSB) outside. We also manufacture structural
panels with OSB on both faces. We recommend curtainwall panels for
your roof, and structural panels for your walls. With structural
wall panels youll need an interior layer of drywall for firewall
protection and aesthetics. We can also provide specialty panels:
nailbase, with an exterior OSB face, but no inside face, and panel-clad,
with tongue & groove already laminated to the inside face.
Important: We recommend you use structural wall
panels (OSB both sides) for your walls and curtainwall (drywall
inside) for your ceilings.
