PANEL INSTALLATION GUIDE TOC > FINISHING UP > VENT YOUR ROOF

Finishing Up

E. Vent your roof. Different builders have different opinions on the virtues of vented roofs. The disadvantage - they cost you time and money, and they also create a thicker roof. Some roofing manufacturers will warrant their products without a vented roof, while others will warrant their products only with a vented roof. We recommend you do vent your roof. The additional time and effort you spend is well worth the benefits: all roofing manufacturers will warrant their products over a vented roof, your vented roof will help overcome any problems that might result from an inadequate vapor barrier in the ceiling, and in extreme climates, your vented roof will prevent ice dams and the like.

It’s easy to create a vented roof with sleepers, 2" x 4" lumber 2’ on center, as shown in Figure 35. If you’re installing asphalt shingles, these go down on top of the outside plywood layer. For cedar shake or metal roofs, you will need closely spaced strapping over the sleepers. Some metal roofs require a layer of plywood.
